Hubert

Hubert liked the new house because he had his own bedroom and no longer had to share with his little brother Charlie. He liked the new house because his room wasn’t on the same floor as his sister’s room, so she wouldn’t come barging in all the time. Hubert had made a poster and stuck it on his door. “No girls allowed” he’d written in big red letters.

Hubert liked his new room because it was decorated in his favourite colours red and blue with UFO’s, stars, and storm troopers. Hubert got off his bed and took a box of sunflower seeds from the bookshelf. He walked over to his pet rat Snowball, opened the cage door, and let him scuttle onto where he snatched the sunflower seeds. Hubert sat on the floor.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do about school tomorrow. The problem is, at my old school they all knew me, everyone liked me, and everyone just called me Hubert, like it was any other name. I could have been Jack or Tom or Harry or Steven or Ben. It didn’t matter. But I think living here it will matter.”
